In short, there are Urgent Commissions that have the chance of rewarding gems. They are rare. You can be given an Urgent Commissions at the start or end of a fight (two chances). So if you run a lot of fights, you get Urgent Commissions, and some of them might reward gems. The drop rate is low. Some people recommend running low-level content with low-end ships to reduce the oil consumption. I did that early on, but once you clear Map 9, you can run in low-oil mode (see below), and I find that more useful, although perhaps it spends more oil.

			The primary source of gold is from the main campaign. Just engage in in the content, and you'll get small amounts of gold from each encounter. Conserving gold is less critical them gems or even oil.

			However, you still want to be mindful. It's very easy to run through your gold. I prioritize:

			* Building Ships, especially during events while trying to acquire the event limited ships
			* Retrofits, top gear crafting, and the other steps that improve my ships' capabilities


			I avoid:

			* Research that costs gold, but see the related section.

In the beginning, it feels like you will have ample gems for everything you want. But this is a gacha game, and they're luring you in. The game gives you a lot of gems at the beginning, but the flow slows down dramatically after a week or two. For this reason, unless you want to spend significant real world money to buy them, it is important to be mindful how you will spend gems.

You will need to spend gems on the following

* Expanding your [[Dorm]]. You will want to allow more than 2 visitors in your dorm, and it gets expensive.
* Expanding your [[Dock]]. You will need to expand the dock to hold all the unique [[Shipgirls]] you keep.
* Expanding your [[Tactical Training Room]]. This lets you have more students at a time.

All other uses of spending gems should come behind these three. For me, the next priority was:

* Buying [[Promise Ring|Promise Rings]] so I could marry [[Shipgirls]].
